The second largest of the Ionian islands, Corfu , has been the inspiration for many literary works including Gerald Durrel’s entertaining natural and social history trilogy of books, Corfu is now the setting for the acclaimed TV series based on his works, “The Durrels”.

Corfu has a diverse history of occupation, it has been fought over and held by many nations over the centuries each of whom have used the island as a holiday destination, the palaces and villas constructed and used by these wealthy visitors becoming an integral part of the Corfoit architecture.
Achillleion or Sissi’s Palace being one such edifice, also known as Kaiser Bill’s Palace after Willhelm II purchased it in 1907. Corfu has been the playground of the elite and royal since before the Venetians arrived in 1386.
